There are two fundamental rules that I believe define a music snob. The first is that a music snob searches to find artists that no one else knows about and to keep them for their very own. The second is to be able to tell others that you've been listening to them for years. The problem is that once you've committed the second one, you've destroyed the first fundamental rule. My wife Nancy says that when more than 10 people have heard of an artist I have to stop liking them. I can't deny that, which leads me to my dilemma of telling you about M. Ward.
Ever since I heard the song Vincent O'Brien some time ago, I've become infatuated with the music of M. Ward. Good songwriters can paint a picture and M. Ward paints a picture with the first few lines of Vincent O'Brien.
He only sings when he's sad
But he's sad all the time, so he sings the whole night through
Yeah, he sings in the day-time, too
His new CD Post War paints many pictures and with some recent critical praise it won't be long until everyone knows about him. In fact, I've already heard the song Poison Cup used in a commercial, which usually I don't like but I've come to realize it's just another venue for artists to get their music out. So, here's my chance to say I've been listening for years. In addition to his new CD, M. Ward also produced the latest John Fahey tribute CD and Jenny Lewis' (from Rilo Kiley) CD's. Crap, I've just let the cat out of the bag on more good artists haven't I?
