Bowling With Robert

Not only did I completely miss a post on hanging out with Robert and making cupcakes and cookies for Halloween, I was remiss in talking about hanging out with him last week. Last Saturday (the 12th, not the 19th) we took Robert bowling. He specifically asked to go bowling so we wanted to make sure that we were doing things that he wanted to do. I was surprised that Nancy actually agreed to it since she hates bowling. Earlier in the week I tried to figure out when was the last time I had gone bowling and the best I could come up with was somewhere around 1990 in Springfield with Brian 'Otter' Asselin.
We picked Robert up at 2:30 and headed over to Riverboat Lanes in Godfrey. Tina (Robert's mom) had three coupons for a free game so we snagged those from her. Robert thought he knew how to get there so we let him navigate. It wasn't too long before he realized that he was lost. I had a general idea where the place was so I basically drove towards that direction. Once we were within a half mile or so of the lanes, Robert remembered where it was located. We went inside, grabbed a lane, put on our fashionable rental shoes, and started searching for a ball. Robert already knew that he needed a size 6 and he found two of them quickly. Robert typed our names into the scoring system and we started bowling the first of three games. After the third game I think Robert could have kept on but Nancy and I were both tired. Robert beat Nancy the first game, but by the end of the third game Nancy was 'a machine'; finishing with a strong 99. Robert was consistently around 80 each time. I rolled a 123-145-141. Not exactly worthy of league bowling, but not bad for a guy who hadn't bowled in over 15 years. By the end though my thumb had all the exercise it could take.
After leaving the bowling alley Robert kind of went into a funk. I'm not sure, but I think he thought the day was over and we were going to take him home. When we let him pick out a place to eat he perked up quite a bit. In fact he was very energetic at the table, filling out the puzzles in the kids book they gave him. After eating at Applebee's he slipped back into a funk again and barely talked on the way home. He seemed OK once we got home though. Next time we are going to watch basketball.
