I was 8 years old when Gerald Ford lucked into the job of president. My perception of that time was that my parents talked more about Nixon resigning than they did about Ford becoming president. Outside of that, I have no real political recollection of anything he did. When I think of Gerald Ford I think of the guy who Chevy Chase made fun of and from what I read Ford was not particularly fond of being portrayed as a klutz. (He was probably the most athletic president and that may be why he lived to be 93.) When I was a little older and Ford was out of the presidency, I remember him hitting a hole in one at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic Pro-Am tournament. (Even before it was called the St. Jude Classic ... which it isn't even called that anymore). I don't remember if it was the same year that Al Geiberger carded a record tying 59, but it was certainly right around that time. If memory serves correctly, Ford hit a spectator at the Bob Hope years later. Maybe it was at the Western Open. The other thing that skews my memory of Gerald Ford is the Simpsons episode where Homer and George Bush #1 live next door. Ford is the president that Homer gets along with best and the line, "Homer, do you like nachos?" is embedded in my brain. I realize now that Ford took over at a pretty divisive time and seemed to meld the country back together. Maybe that's because he did understand the Homer's of the world; the normal people of the world. Rest in Peace, sir.
