I can't say that I'm a huge David Halberstam fan, but I do know a good baseball writer when I see one. I read Teammates a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Heck, it's not really even a baseball book other than the fact the characters are all former Red Sox players. They could have just as easily been New York Rangers players since the point of the book was about the camaraderie that only sports can provide. Teammates was also where I was first exposed to the fact that Ted Williams was a giant jackass. I've had October 1964 sitting on my bookshelf for years and I've yet to read it. I guess I sort of feel obligated now. I'm sure that after reading it I'll be more bummed out about Halberstam's untimely death.
