I've really moved away from jazz in the last couple of years. I've never been a gigantic jazz nut, but I probably have more jazz in my collection than the average suburbanite. I lean towards guitarists first, then probably the funk/jazz thing, then anything on Blue Note.
Nostalgia 77 is none of these things, but it is a wholly different kind of jazz. Mostly experimental, and bordering on the edge of electronica, it still finds it's foothold in the heart of what is mostly considered to be jazz. I know almost nothing about Nostalgia 77, but I was intrigued by the sound. It's clearly jazz, but there's something about that's just different. I can't really put my finger on it though; I just know it sounds different than your typical trio/quartet/whatever. My job allows me to listen to music and when it's time for me code I like to listen to something that's typically background music. Everything Under The Sun fits that bill with good solid grooves, plenty of horns, and some surprisingly good, if not obscure, singing.
But, there's nothing real groundbreaking here. It's just a solid jazz CD that likes to flirt in the trip-hop realm just a tad. Pick a song, any song, and it will be indicative of the entire CD.
