The End Of The Ron Polk Era

Link: http://www.msstate.edu/web/slideshows/PackforPolk/

Polk was the coach when I attended State and he had been the coach there for quite awhile before that. I don't care where you coach, 35 years and only one losing season (this one) is quite an achievement. Plus, it's not like he plays in the easiest conference in the world either, especially when perennial powerhouse LSU is in the same division. In my mind, he deserves to be up there as one of the greatest college baseball coaches ever ... and yes, I'm biased. More than anything, he wasn't shy about voicing his opinions about the unfairness of college football getting 35 scholarships a year and you can't get one for baseball, which is why he retired. He couldn't put up with the NCAA nonsense any longer.

A short list of MSU baseball players who have gone on to very good major league careers:
Will Clark
Jon Papelbon
Paul Maholm (OK, still to be determined if he has a very good career)
Bobby Thigpen (single season MLB saves record holder)
Jeff Brantley
Rafael Palmeiro*
